Every year, lakhs of us make the same mistake. We step out on Saptami with a wishlist of pandals, spend two hours stuck between Gariahat and Lake Town, and come home having seen three. Kolkata’s Durga Puja is enormous now — UNESCO added it to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021 — and the crowds have grown to match.
Durga Puja 2026 in Kolkata runs from Shashthi on 16 October to Vijaya Dashami on 21 October, with Mahalaya on 10 October. The best way to see more pandals with less standing around is to pick one area a night and never backtrack. We built a free tool that does exactly that — the Sidus Puja Planner — pick your pandals, pick your evenings, and it hands you a route.
1. Durga Puja 2026: the dates
Mahalaya falls on Saturday, 10 October, marking the end of Pitru Paksha and the start of Devi Paksha — the fortnight during which Durga is believed to journey toward earth. The main five days run from Shashthi to Dashami.
| Day | 2026 Date | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Mahalaya | Sat, 10 Oct | Devi Paksha begins. No pandal is inaugurated before this day. |
| Maha Shashthi | Fri, 16 Oct | Pujo formally begins; most pandals open to visitors. |
| Maha Saptami | Sat–Sun, 17–18 Oct | The tithi runs across two days this year — Nabapatrika (Kolabou) Puja. |
| Maha Ashtami | Mon, 19 Oct | The most sacred day — Pushpanjali and Sandhi Puja. Liquor shops and bars shut statewide. |
| Maha Navami | Tue, 20 Oct | Homage continues; many families visit favourite pandals a second time. |
| Vijaya Dashami | Wed, 21 Oct | Sindoor Khela and immersion (visarjan) begin. |
You may see other dates circulating online — some panjikas place Shashthi a day later, which shifts everything after it by a day. Both are correct, for different traditions; the dates above follow the Bengal (para-viddha) reckoning most Kolkata pandals use.
2. Why pandal-hopping needs a plan this year
Some queues now need planning of their own. At Sreebhumi Sporting Club, one of the most-visited pujas in the city, budget close to two hours at peak — in past years the line has reached VIP Road. Ashtami and Navami nights are the busiest; Shashthi and Saptami mornings are calmer.
Pick one cluster of pandals per evening — north and south Kolkata are separate outings — and see them in an order that never doubles back. That single decision does more for how many pandals you see than which night you go.
3. How the Sidus Puja Planner works
It’s a free tool at sidusrealty.com/puja/ — no login, no phone number, no app to install.
- Choose your Pujas. Search or filter by area — North, Central, South Kolkata, Salt Lake — and tap ❤️ to add each one.
- Choose your days. Panchami through Dashami; pick only the evenings you’re actually free.
- Get your personal plan. It groups nearby pandals into the same evening, orders them to cut travel, and shows your next Puja with a one-tap Google Maps button. Mark a pandal visited and it tells you where to go next.
You can also share the finished plan on WhatsApp, so the whole family works off the same route.
4. This year’s big pandal themes, by area
Kolkata’s big pujas guard their themes through the monsoon, then reveal them one by one. Here’s what’s confirmed for 2026, grouped the way you’d actually walk them.
| Pandal | Locality | 2026 theme | Crowd |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sreebhumi Sporting Club | Lake Town | Jaipur’s Hawa Mahal, all 953 windows | Very High |
| Santosh Mitra Square | Sealdah | Vande Mataram — the song’s 150th year | Very High |
| Ekdalia Evergreen | Gariahat | Somnath Temple, first of the twelve jyotirlingas | High |
| Bagbazar Sarbojanin | Bagbazar | No theme — traditional ekchala idol, daker saj | Moderate |
| Kumartuli Park | Kumartuli | “O Ganga, why do you flow?” | Moderate |
| Kumartuli Sarbojanin | Kumartuli | “Look closely” — pairs easily with Kumartuli Park | Moderate |
| Tala Prattoy | Tala | “Biyojon” (separation), 101st year, new smaller site | High — go early |
| Samaj Sebi Sangha | Lake Market | Uttam Kumar’s birth centenary, 208 film posters | High |
| Ballygunge Cultural | Ballygunge | “Jojon” (joining) — built from chips packets and old flex banners | Moderate |
| Suruchi Sangha | New Alipore | “Utsho” (the source) | High |
| Bosepukur Sitala Mandir | Kasba | “Chup” (hush) | Moderate |
| College Square / Md Ali Park | College Street | No theme confirmed yet — go for the lit water and sheer scale | High |
Themes checked mid-September 2026 from local Pujo listings and committee announcements; a handful of big names hadn’t unveiled theirs yet at that point. All of these, plus the rest of the city’s pandals, are searchable inside the Puja Planner.
5. Metro, timings and this year’s rules
Kolkata Metro typically runs special Puja-season schedules, generally from around 8 AM and well past midnight on the peak nights, with fuller timetables closer to Saptami–Navami. Confirm the exact hours on Kolkata Metro’s own channels a few days before you travel.
- No DJ music anywhere through Pujo, immersion processions included. Expect dhak, not bass.
- Liquor shops and bars shut across West Bengal on Maha Ashtami.
- A VIP pass won’t help at the biggest names. Crowd-management passes typically don’t cover Sreebhumi, Ekdalia, Suruchi, Tala Prattoy, College Square or Mohammad Ali Park — check with the issuing body before relying on one.
- Go early morning or well after midnight for the biggest pandals — the two calmest windows.
- Wear shoes you’re happy to walk 8–10 km in.
- Carry water and a power bank; phone networks jam near the busiest pandals.
- Agree a meeting point with your group before joining a big queue.
